Leading general counsels from Charles River Laboratories, USI Insurance Services, and HP Inc. discuss the challenges of managing a legal department today and the skills required to do the job effectively.
The discussion begins with the role of the general counsel and how it has dramatically changed given the breadth and complexities of the issues facing, and corresponding needs of, an in-house attorney’s internal business clients. The panelists then share their views on building and managing an effective legal department, including what they look for when building their team and how they incorporate ways in which to train and develop that talent. The discussion and Q&A then dives deeper into what it takes to be an effective leader, including how to utilize technology and develop cross-functional relationships with others within the business, including the CEO, CFO, and the board.
At the end of this session, participants will have a better understanding of:
• The role and demands of an in-house attorney in today’s changing landscape;
• The skills needed to be an effective in-house attorney and leader within an organization;
• Ways in which to help staff in-house attorneys develop the skills and cross-functional relationships needed to succeed in the position;
• How to use technology and artificial intelligence to build and manage an effective legal department; and
• How a general counsel might build and sustain effective relationships with the CEO, CFO, and the board.
