Program Description

The General Counsel of Data Collective hosts an engaging and thought-provoking discussion among a venture capitalist and journalists from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News about the challenges involved in protecting a private market investor against the risk of investing in a fraudulent or illegitimate entrepreneur.

The discussion begins with why in today’s private market it is so difficult to match legitimate capital with legitimate ideas, including addressing the phenomenon of “growth hacking.” The discussion then turns to WeWork to discuss how such a failure might be avoided in the future. The panelists end with an insightful discussion of how human psychology plays such a prominent role in the private market and the incentives or disincentives at play for a venture capitalist (as compared to an investigative journalist) to differentiate between a genuine and disingenuous entrepreneur.
