Program Description

Merchant banker and former BigLaw attorney, Omeed Malik, engages in a riveting discussion with David Enrich, NYT journalist and “Dark Towers” author, about the downfall of Deutsche Bank and the lessons to be had from the bank’s demise when working with, representing, or investigating a financial institution in today’s global, banking industry.

The discussion begins with a synopsis of Deutsche Bank’s pre-2008 banking strategies that led to its demise and, arguably, played a role in precipitating the financial crisis. The discussion also addresses the business and reputational risks associated with a bank’s decision to do business with a complicated public figure such as Trump or Epstein, and the additional conflicts of interest that arise when that client is elected to public office. The discussion ends with an analysis of how and why today’s banking industry systemically encourages fraud-like behavior on behalf of the individuals who work within it, and how such institutional flaws might be addressed.
